Fujitsu ScanSnap week 2: some old photos…

Last time round we scanned some of the boys drawings without even reading the manual to see how easy the Scan Snap was to use. It turned out to be a cinch and no real challenge.

This time round, we’ve been set the task of scanning some old photos. I’m old enough to have been into photography during the age of film. Heck, when I started taking pictures, it was pre-APS film. I’ve got albums of photos sitting around in a cupboard that I’ve never done much with. Yonks ago I attempted to digitise them on my Dad’s A4 flatbed scanner but oh boy, it took such a long time and was sooooo clunky. The bulb in the scanner seemed bright enough to illuminate the whole room and it took an age to do a single photo. With the ScanSnap though it chunters through a photo as quickly as it did one of the boys drawings.

So without further ado, here’s a  20 odd year old photo…

Dave Trenchard: where are you now?

What surprised me was how well the scans came out. The prints weren’t entirely brilliant to start with  but the Scan Snap did a sterling job as you can see. I genuinely don’t think it looks like a sheet fed scan, which is pretty impressive. We did try scanning the school panoramic photo but it came up with an error message, refusing to scan anything over 36cm long. That’s fair enough, 36cm is well over the length of a sheet of A4 paper but it was a shame it wouldn’t scan up to that length and ignore the rest. Aside from that, no complaints. Except of course for Dave Trenchard. I expect to hear from him imminently…
