Excuses, excuses

It was a lovely day yesterday. This meant two things: 1) wifey was laid up in bed with horrendous lurgy and 2) the boy didn’t want to go out anywhere.

You can always rely on the boy to put a spanner in the works when it comes to a trip somewhere and Sunday was no exception. After a fairly low key Saturday which involved a trip to my Mum’s over lunch, after swimming on Sunday I thought it would be a good idea to take all three kids out and leave wifey in a bit of peace and quiet. I opted for the zoo as we’ve just renewed our membership. We’ve also cancelled our membership of the local “activity farm”. The farm was more expensive and importantly, too close. It’s about a 20 minute drive to Whipsnade, so I get a bit of peace and quiet for at least 40 minutes of our trip.

Predictably the announcement of an impending trip was met with joy by Fifi and Ned and utter misery by the boy, who threw himself to the ground and started whimpering. Being the fair parent that I’m renowned for being, I told him that if he could give me a good reason for not going, we wouldn’t have to. To be fair to him, the reasons he gave were hard to argue with:

The boy has refused to go to the zoo “it’s too hot and both my thumbs hurt.” Can’t argue with that I suppose :-/

In the end we decided to stay in and do some gardening. I put up the pop up tent, and spent most of the afternoon trying to get Ned to wear his wellies outside and take them off indoors. Inbetween this task, which I failed at dramatically, we found loads of worms, did some homework, removed hundreds of large stones from a raised bed that we removed hundreds of large stones from last year.

We finished the day off with spaghetti and meatballs, which lead to another unfortunate situation. There had been 10 meatballs (all that were left) between the 5 of us. I urged caution to the children- told them to have 2 each- and then was a bit disappointed to find that wifey and I had one each, Ned and Fifi two and the boy had accidentally-they-fell-onto-my-plate-while-I-was-looking-at-the-fish-tank taken 4 of them.

Needless to say it ended in some door slamming…
