How to keep fit and healthy in 2016

According to TIME magazine, the most commonly broken New Year’s Resolutions include learning something new, getting out of debt and saving money, spending more time with the family, and travelling to new places.

However, three of the top five failed promises relate to health and well-being. Apparently, we are unable to lose weight and get fit, quit smoking, or eat healthier and diet.

But while electronic cigarettes  can help you kick your smoking habit once and for all, how can you lose weight and get fit as well as eat healthier and diet for 2016?

Eat breakfast everyday

There is a reason why people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Failing to eat anything in the morning will have a negative affect on your mental and physical performance for the rest of the day.

Furthermore, eating breakfast can help maintain stable blood sugar levels and a healthy weight because you won’t be as hungry throughout the day and will be less likely to binge on snacks.

Drink plenty of water

Despite the promises of some drinks manufacturers and the fact that most fluids will keep your body hydrated, nothing comes close to the healing power of water.

Along with cleansing your organs and digestive system, water is great for the brain and helps flush out toxins through perspiration and urine.

Maintain a balanced diet

There is nothing wrong with indulging in the occasional greasy takeaway or sugary treat as long as you maintain a balanced diet for the rest of the time. This means eating as much fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains as possible.

You should also give lean sources of protein such as chicken, fish, tofu and beans priority, while avoiding highly processed foods containing artificial sweeteners, hidden sugars, and excessive fat.

Exercise on a regular basis

Sounds obvious, but you must exercise on a regular basis in order to keep fit and healthy. This doesn’t always need to involve going to the gym every day either, as walking just a few times a week is often enough for some people.

But to avoid boredom, mix up your cardiovascular exercise and think about trying new hobbies or pursuits. Your body will greatly appreciate it, as physical exertion strengthens the heart and lungs, improves circulation, and combats depression.

Get enough sleep

A lot of people underestimate the importance of sleep even though it can have a significant impact on your physical and mental health. If you don’t get enough shut-eye every night, it will have an affect on your metabolism, mood, concentration, memory, stress hormones, immune system, and cardiovascular health.

Sleep needs vary across age groups and are particularly affected by the individual’s lifestyle, but around eight hours every night should be enough time for your body to rest, repair and rejuvenate itself.

Avoid stress

Often easier said than done, but by avoiding stress your body is less likely to suffer from heart trouble or digestive problems.

Consider doing more of the things you love, taking additional time off work, surrounding yourself with loved ones or giving something like meditation a go to banish stress from your life.
