It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

So we’re now in mid December. That means the Selfridge’s Christmas Department has been open for about 5 months, and that means it’s time for a pre Christmas post.

There are three things that say Christmas is almost upon us to me:

  1. The River Cottage Christmas Special. It’s all about Hugh’s bird in a bird in a bird, and some wassailing of course. It never feels properly like Christmas until I’ve watched this. The sort of idealised country Christmas, full of old tradition and so on that Hugh conjures up is great and makes me long for a simpler life with less plastic clutter to tread on.
  2. The Radio Times Christmas Special. For me this was a part of my childhood Christmas experience as much as soggy sprouts were. We still only have Freeview/Freesat and mostly watch the BBC channels and Channel 4, so it’s always great to go through the Radio Times and pick the stuff we want to see. Inevitably we also end up watching TV edits for films we actually already have on DVD or BD at really inconvenient times too.
  3. It’s Chriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiistmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas! An overwhelming urge to hunt Noddy Holder down and punch him in the throat is the final pointer that Christmas is nearly upon us.
Danger is dangerously close to walking at his first Christmas but as the callouses on his knees and elbows attest to, he’s just too darn quick on all fours to see the benefit of being upright at the moment. Fifi was born two weeks later in the year and started walking on Christmas day, so perhaps the little fella is holding himself back for a special Christmas treat for us all.

It’s been one hell of a year, with some incredible highs and lows but I’m looking forward to being off for a few days over Christmas with my family.
